Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens, better known as Queen Latifah in the US, is a performer and actress. in film, music and on television, Queen Latifah has won the award of two Screen Actors Guild Awards (two Image Awards), a Grammy Award, six more Grammy nominations, and nods to the Emmy Award. Queen Latifah is an Newark New Jersey native. Her parents were Lancelot Sr. as a police officer as well as Rita teacher of Irvington High School. The couple divorced at the time Latifah turned ten. Latifah attended Catholic school in Newark, New Jersey and was raised through her family's Baptist Church. At the age of 8, her cousin gave Latifah the name of a stage Latifah that means tender and gentle in Arabic. Being a tall girl, her height of 5'10 inches Latifah was a forward for her high school basketball team. She performed the number home from the musical The Wiz in a high school performance. Latifah started to beatbox for the rap group Ladies Fresh. Latifah was a part of the Flavor Unit's original group that included several MCs as well as DJ Mark 45 King. Mark James aka the 45 King, made a recording of Queen Latifah's Princess of the Posse rap. The recording was given to host Yo! MTV Raps Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was enthralled by the song. He signed Latifah and dropped her debut track Wrath of My Madness in 1988.
